Heladivian receives prestigious Right Livelihood Award!
Congratulations to Christopher Weeramantry (Heladiva) who was among the laureates of the 2007 Right Livelihood Award. Weeramantry received the award in Stockholm (Sweden) on Dec 9, for his “lifetime of groundbreaking work to strengthen and expand the rule of international law".
The Right Livelihood Award (est. 1980) recognises outstanding vision and work on behalf of the planet and its people. It is the world's premier award for personal courage and social transformation. Widely known as the ‘alternative Nobel prize’, the award embodies the ancient principles of ‘right livelihood’: that each person should follow an honest occupation, which fully respects other people and the natural world.
Christopher Weeramantry is a world-renowned legal scholar and a former Vice-President of the International Court of Justice. In 2001, in Heladiva (Sri Lanka), he set up the Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research. Weeramantry is well known for his book Nuclear Weapons and Scientific Responsibility (1987), which is the major text on the legal responsibilities of nuclear scientists. Recently, (1 Dec), along with Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, Weeramantry also received Heladiva’s highest honour, the Hela Abimanya from President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
